Our number one goal at Winfield-Mt Union high school is to recognize that the program is designed to develop athletes and not football, basketball, volleyball, or baseball players. We welcome ALL students who have goals with the understanding that our focus is to make them better athletes. Developing athletes and an improved level of athleticism is the number one goal of our program. This goal is accomplished through a number of different means including injury prevention, body awareness and increased performance levels. Injury prevention is a high priority and is accomplished through teaching and requiring proper technique, constant evaluation, and testing measures while increasing performance through proper training. The following principles are utilized.
Ground Based Movements: Force production through the ground.
Multiple Joint Movements: Complex movements to train more muscle mass in less time.
Three Dimensional Movements: Mimic movements made during sporting events.
We have certain training parameters that are identified before we program for our student athletes. Some of those include identifying the level of preparedness of the athlete and identifying their training age. We are conscious and cautious when dealing with outside stressors that may affect training such as sleep, nutrition, practice/game schedules, school, etc as well. The methods employed will be in line with the concurrent/conjugate method. The goal is to develop all strength qualities in conjunction with one another as high school athletes tend to lose those qualities very quickly if not trained frequently. Fine tuning motor control via every possible means yields the best outcome.
The warm up is extensive and well directed. It is designed to get a lot of work done before actually stepping into the weight room. Speed training will occur on opposite days of lifting. As a staff we strongly encourage track, track is the best way to get faster. We also adhere to the principle that less is more. The Winfield-Mt. Union strength and conditioning staff, coaches, and athletes are committed to making our program the best program in the SEISC, and the state of Iowa. This is a long process that takes commitment from many people but we are confident that TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY can get this done through honor, tenacity, toughness, and unity. GO WOLVES.
